Product Facts

Interesting Facts and Extra Information

The flag of China was created at the beginning of the Communist era in 1949. The party posted in newspapers for flag ideas from the people of China. The design that was chosen was from a working class man called Zeng Liansong. His original design featured a large star, representing the Communist Party, and four smaller stars representing the four social classes within China. Within the large star there was also a sickle and hammer representing the Communist Party, however this was dropped from the final design as it was said to look too much like the flag of the Soviet Union.

The red background of the flag is said to represent the revolutionary communist philosophy, red is also the traditional ethnic colour of the ‘Han’ who make up the majority of the population of China.

The yellow in the flag also has traditional roots. From 1644 until 1912 yellow was the traditional colour of the Chinese flags, representing the ‘Manchu’ dynasty.
