Product Facts

Interesting facts and extra information

The flag of France is also known as the ‘Drapeau Français’ or the French Tricolour. The French tricolour has been the national emblem of France since 1794 after the French Revolution. Before the French Revolution the national flag of France was a plain white flag. The red and blue of the flag represents the colours of Paris and the white is the traditional colour of the Bourbon family who ruled France before the revolution. It is not known why white continued to appear on the flag after the revolution. There was a short period between 1814 and 1830 when the national flag of France returned to a plain white one. This was when the Bourbon family returned to power after the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, before another revolution in 1830.

The French flag is not only the national flag of France but also of the French islands of Wallis & Futana, Saint Martin, Reunion and Mayotte. French speaking Saint Bathemely, also known as ‘Saint Barts’, also uses the French flag as their national flag.
