James VI of Scotland united the thrones of England, Scotland and Wales on 24 March 1603 when he inherited the English and Scottish thrones. This was after the death of Queen Elizabeth the I, he then ruled Scotland as King James VI and England as King James I.

At this time King James used both the St George flag and the St Andrew flag to represent both countries separately.  Wales was considered to be part of England during these years and was therefore represented on the flag as part of the English St. Georges cross.

1606

A new flag was created to represent the union between them countries of Scotland and England, by joining the flags together the Flag of Great Britain and first union flag was created. This was however only to be used at sea as land forces would continue to use their existing banners. At first the flag was called Britain or Britain flag, a name that would continue to be used until 1639. After however it was later referred to as the Union.

1685

The earliest evidence that the Union Jack was flying from the King's castles and forts.

1694

The Union Jack offically replaced the cross of St George on ships employed by government departments.

1707

Then, during the reign of Queen Anne, the parliaments of England and Scotland were united to form the new nation of Great Britain, this meant that it was then adopted by land forces.

1801

The Act of 1800 united Great Britain and Ireland, when Ireland was on a search to join Great Britain, the Union Flag was redesigned to include the Cross of St. Patrick the patron saint of Ireland. It is in this form that the British flag exists today
